About Capital and Environmental Resource Management

The Capital and Environmental Resource Management section of the Office of Resource Management and Planning is responsible for the management of physical, environmental, and capital planning issues on the UC Davis Campus. Particular emphasis is placed upon resource efficiency in the physical, environmental, and capital investment resource areas. Capital and Environmental Resource Management tries to balance two primary goals to optimize the use of campus resources:

  1. Creating a physical framework for a diverse and dynamic academic program
  2. Managing campus lands and resources in a spirit of stewardship for the environment

The goals of physical planning projects and activities are to 1) distribute space and land effectively and fairly and 2) maintain planning flexibility for the future. Examples of physical planning projects include the development of the UC Davis Long Range Development Plan (LRDP), District Planning Guides for the Main Campus and the Russell Ranch, and site studies for Major Capital Projects. Campus planners are also involved in community and regional planning activities.

The goals of environmental planning are to develop resource management plans to promote long-term sustainability of the campus' natural resources and to manage the environmental review process required by the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). Other activities include the development of a UC Davis geographic information system (GIS) and participation in community and regional resource issues as they relate to the campus.

The goals of capital and space resource management projects and activities are to assess the capital investment needs of the campus and to maintain a 10-year capital plan that matches campus priorities. Activities include the development of a state-funded capital program and 5-year plan and development of non-state capital program plans. Capital and Environmental Resource Management is also the office of record for the UC Davis facilities inventory (formerly known as the FDX) and is responsible for developing tools to support space management on the campus.

The goals of the Putah Creek Riparian Reserve are to 1) maintain and enhance the health of the ecosystem within and adjacent to Putah Creek within the Reserve boundaries, 2) serve as a place for campus and other research activities, 3) provide areas for teaching and education about the environment, and 4) involve the campus and regional community in its stewardship, as the key element of its public service mission. The Putah Creek Riparian Reserve is an on-campus nature preserve for use as a teaching, research, and wildlife area. The On-campus location of the Reserve creates opportunities for faculty, undergraduate and graduate research projects and class use within a short bicycle ride from the core campus. The Putah Creek Riparian Reserve Management Plan (12MB PDF file) sets the framework for direction and uses within the Reserve.
